How to send an EPUB to a Kindle

Short answer: use Amazon’s Send to Kindle. It accepts EPUB files and adds them to your Kindle library. Upload the book at amazon.com/sendtokindle, or email it to your Kindle’s Send to Kindle address.

Copying an EPUB over USB doesn’t work: Standard Ebooks’ help notes that Kindles “cannot receive epubs through USB”.

Updated 15 October 2026. Steps and limits follow Amazon’s Send to Kindle help.

Send an EPUB from your browser

  1. Go to Send to Kindle and sign in

Open amazon.com/sendtokindle and sign in with the Amazon account your Kindle uses.

  2. Add the EPUB

Choose the .epub file. Files can be up to 200 MB.

  3. Keep “Add to your library” on

Amazon recommends this so you can download the book on any device linked to your account.

  4. Send it and wait for delivery

Amazon processes the book, then it appears in your Kindle library. Make sure the Kindle is connected to the internet.

Send an EPUB by email

  1. Find your Send to Kindle address. Each Kindle device and Kindle app on your account has its own address.
  2. Approve the address you’ll send from. Go to Manage Your Content and Devices › Preferences › Personal Document Settings › Approved Personal Document Email List, then Add a new e-mail address. Amazon only accepts documents from approved addresses.
  3. Attach the .epub and send. Amazon’s limits are up to 25 attachments per email, 50 MB in total, and up to 15 approved sender addresses. It keeps trying to deliver for up to 60 days.

Amazon also offers Send to Kindle apps for Windows and Mac, and you can send from the Kindle app on iOS and Android.

If Amazon rejects the book

Reading on your computer instead

If you only want to read the book at your desk, you don’t need Amazon at all. A DRM-free EPUB opens in Apple Books on a Mac, in free apps such as calibre and Thorium, or in a Chrome tab with an extension such as Quire EPUB Reader, which we make. See how to open EPUB files in Chrome.
