Split a PDF into separate files

Choose a PDF and split it into one file per page, into ranges you type (such as 1-3, 4-8), or into parts with a fixed number of pages. You get the new PDFs together in one ZIP file.

The splitting happens in your browser, and your file never leaves your device.

Questions

Questions and limits

What this tool does and what it can't do.

How do I write page ranges?

Separate ranges with commas, for example 1-3, 4-8, 12. Each range becomes its own PDF. A range with no end, such as 9-, runs to the last page. Ranges may overlap.

What is in the ZIP file?

One PDF per part, named after your file and the pages it holds, for example "Report pages 04-08.pdf". If the split produces a single part, you get that PDF directly instead of a ZIP.

Are links, bookmarks and form fields kept?

Each part keeps the form fields, links, bookmarks and tagged structure that belong to its pages. It uses the same PDF.js code that the Quire editor uses to save pages. A link or bookmark that points to a page in a different part has nothing to point to in this part, so it stops working.

Why do the parts add up to more than the original?

Each part carries its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use. Splitting a 2 MB PDF into 50 single pages can add up to more than 2 MB in total.

Is there a file size limit?

Files can be up to 100 MB. Your device has to hold the file and the result in memory, so a phone with little memory may fail on large files before that limit.

Can it open password-protected PDFs?

No. The tool does not support encrypted or password-protected PDFs. Remove the password in the app that created the file, then try again.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The page and its code load from quireapps.com. After that, your browser reads the file and does all the work in this tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the page has no analytics or tracking. To check, open your browser's developer tools and watch the Network tab while you use the tool.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

It is free, and you don't need an account. The tool adds no watermark and has no daily limit.

Which browsers does it work in?

Testing covers Chrome. The tool uses features that current versions of Edge, Firefox (105 or later) and Safari (16.4 or later) also have, but those browsers have had less testing here.
